Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) did Monday before a subcommittee of the House Ethics Committee what most defendants would love to do during the course of their own trials: declare the proceedings unfair, complain about the lawyers, and then make a dramatic exit from the room to the clicks and whirs of the cameras. If Rangel [...]

Representative Charles B. Rangel, the veteran Democrat of New York, walked out of his House ethics trial this morning after accusing lawmakers of refusing to give him time to raise money for a lawyer to defend himself.
His threat to leave the hearing prompted the ethics panel to adjourn to closed session to discuss his request for a delay in the proceedings. After a brief meeting, the committee returned, saying that Mr. Rangel’s request had been denied.
(The Times CityRoom blog has the up-to-the-minute status of the hearings.)
Mr. Rangel, who is accused of violating House rules on fund-raising and his personal finances, is defending himself because, he says, he cannot afford a lawyer and he has not been given the time to solicit contributions for a legal defense fund.
In a rambling opening statement, Mr. Rangel railed against the lawmakers who are conducting the hearing for insisting that it be held in a short period of time.
“I truly believe that I am not being treated fairly,” Mr. Rangel said.
Mr. Rangel, 80, was elected to his 21st term in the House this month. He was forced to step down as chairman of the House Ways and Means committee because of the ethics investigation, and he could be sanctioned if the panel rules against him.
