About 11 a.m. on Wednesday the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, tweeted a message chastising Congressional Republican leaders for delaying a meeting with President Obama that had been expected to take place on Thursday.

“With millions of ppl looking 4 work, there’s no time 2 waste. My GOP colleagues should have accepted the President’s offer 2 meet this week,” Mr. Reid typed, using shorthand to stay within the 140-character limit.

Or at least, the message came from Mr. Reid’s Twitter account. Who actually typed it remains something of a mystery.

Several hours later on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Reid was asked about the delayed meeting as he emerged from a lengthy meeting with his Democratic caucus. The majority leader looked puzzled and the reporter repeated the question, asking if the delay had affected anything.

Mr. Reid turned to his trusty spokesman, Jim Manley, seeming even more perplexed and asked if the meeting in fact had been delayed. Mr. Manley confirmed that it had been postponed. (For the record, Republicans insist the meeting time had never been confirmed).

So Mr. Reid then had his answer. “It hasn’t affected anything,” he replied. “Because I didn’t know.”

But if Mr. Reid did not know the meeting had been postponed, who was at the keyboard sending out the Twitter message earlier in the day?

On that question, the majority leader’s office did not have a ready answer.
