CHICAGO – Rahm Emanuel, the former White House Chief of Staff, has raised more than $10 million in his quest to become mayor of Chicago.
Filed with state election officials on Thursday, the campaign reports of Mr. Emanuel and his opponents offer a first real look at the financial side of this city’s first competitive race for mayor in years.
In addition to the money he collected by the start of this year, Mr. Emanuel, who formerly served in Congress, also moved $1.1 million from a federal campaign fund into his mayor’s effort for a total of $11.7 million; he has already spent $3.4 million, the report showed.
Mr. Daley, who has served as mayor even longer than his father did, has been mayor for more than 20 years, making any comparison to previous election spending complicated. In 1989, when Mr. Daley was first elected, he raised over $7 million.
Gery Chico, another among half a dozen candidates on the Feb. 22 ballot and a former chief of staff to departing mayor, Richard M. Daley, reported raising $2.3 million by the start of the year. His staff said Thursday that the campaign total was more than $2.8 million now.
It was uncertain late Thursday what some of the others running for mayor have raised; filings were not officially due until midnight Thursday.
Miguel del Valle, the city clerk, issued a statement saying that his campaign had raised $110,000 by the start of the year, and another $60,000 in donations and in-kind contributions since.
