Dick Cheney is sponsoring a shakeup attempt at the Republican National Committee.
The former vice president is putting his power as a Republican rainmaker behind Maria Cino, a former Bush administration official and Republican strategist, who is preparing to run for party chairman.
Mr. Cheney will headline a fund-raiser for Ms. Cino on Tuesday, along with three former Bush advisers, including Ed Gillespie, the co-founder of American Crossroads. Two former Republican representatives, the husband and wife duo Susan Molinari and Bill Paxon, are also hosting, according to the invitation and news reports.
Ms. Cino has served as both deputy chairman of the R.N.C. and the executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Her Bush-era support is to be expected — she was also deputy secretary of the Department of Transportation under President George W. Bush and was the political director for his 2000 presidential campaign.
The event will be held at the Alexandria, Va., home of Mary Matalin, the longtime Republican strategist who is famously married to James Carville, the longtime Democratic strategist. (Perhaps he’s the reason for the hard stop time — the schmoozing ends at 8 p.m., just 90 minutes after the event begins.)
Ms. Cino hasn’t officially declared herself a candidate, but she did set up a 527 group, “Maria for Chairman,” on Friday to collect funds for a run.
At least seven Republicans are considering running for national party chairman, including Ms. Cino and the current, embattled party leader, Michael Steele, who has remained quiet about his intentions.

Are hedge funds cheering Consumer Reports’ somewhat damning review of Apple’s iPhone 4? That’s the suggestion by Jason Schwarz, who writes on Seeking Alpha that the funds are awaiting what he calls an “Apple slingshot”. Shares of Apple slid more than 4 percent on Tuesday after a poor review for its iPhone 4 from Consumer [...]
