Elton John to Perform at Fund-Raiser

LOS ANGELES – A private concert at a Beverly Hills mansion by Sir Elton John?

Indeed. Sir John has agreed to perform at a fund-raiser to raise money for the legal battle to challenge Proposition 8, the initiative that overturned gay marriage in California. Tickets for the event next Wednesday start at $1,000 a person, organizers expect to raise $2 million and it is, as of Friday, almost sold out.

Which perhaps is not that much of a surprise. This is not your run of the mill fund-raiser. For one thing, Sir John is expected to play a 90-minute set. For another, it is at the rather famous Beverly Hills estate of Ronald W. Burkle, the investor, known as Green Acres. For another, how many events can claim a host committee that includes David Geffen, the openly gay Hollywood mogul, and Ken Mehlman, the now openly gay former chairman of the Republican National Committee?

Not to mention Barbra Streisand, Norman Lear and Rob Reiner, as well as the plaintiffs and the lawyers involved in the case.

“As you can see from the invite, this is THE must attend entertainment event of the year …so far,” said Chad Griffin, who is the board president of the American Foundation for Equal Rights.
